January 21st, 2010

Remember our environmental print walk last week? To reflect on the signs we noticed on our walk and to celebrate what we can read, we are working on making the story of our walk into a class book. Today, we started the illustrations by looking at pictures of the signs we studied and making realistic drawings.

We talked about the shapes of the signs and tried to copy them. We had to work hard to make straight or curvy lines.

Some of our signs had words.

If we needed a different color than the primary colors, we had to remember what we had studied about color mixing and then mix our own colors to use on our signs.

We also had a new interactive chart center today. We pick a name from our name list and then pick out letters that look like the letters in the name. We put them in order and then sing a song about the letters and our names to the tune of B-I-N-G-O.

We are also enjoying our new centers, including our word builder center and our alphabet train center. We like to work in teams and negotiate with each other as we use new materials. It is hard taking turns and waiting, but we are so kind to one another.

We built our counting skills and practiced patience while we played The Very Hungry Caterpillar game.

We continued to write stories to add to our Authors' Wall!

We listened to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom on the iPod.

Next week will begin our study of Animals in Winter!

Special Request:
Do you own any fake furs or brown colored vests? Anything that would make a great bear/rabbit/goose/forest animal animal tail? We could use them as we turn creative play into a winter animal habitat!
